Aurora

My thoughts kept me from sleeping. I’m going to look hungover, standing next to Melissa as she says I do.

I head to the kitchen to make me some much-needed coffee. As I’m standing at the counter, adding the creamer into my cup, Carlie comes in, and I can see the vestige of her tears.

“I have no words for you right now. I’m completely shocked, angry, hurt, and my mind is just blown.” She walks off, shaking her head.

Shit!

“Carlie! Please, talk to me.”

“I have to process this, Aurora. Just... please, go,” she yells, slamming her door. Process? No words? Shit! Alonzo!

I grab my coffee, an extra cup, and run out the door. I have a few hours before we have to be at the church, so I’ll do what I can until then. Walking into the living room of my childhood home, all the good memories flood my head. Is my family that bad? People react in different ways to the word “mafia.”

“How is she?”

The deep voice makes me jump. I was lost in my own thoughts. I didn’t know if he would be here, but not answering his door at home, this was my last shot at finding him. I turn around to Alonzo’s sad, heartbroken look and can tell he’s worried.

“Not sure,” I respond with a quizzical stare. I have no idea what the hell is going on yet. Did she tell him she loved him, and he didn’t have the same feelings, breaking her heart? Did he just want the college fling Carlie was worried about, tearing her heart from her chest? The look on Alonzo’s face doesn’t match the situations I’ve mustered up in my head. What has caused both of them to be upset?

“What happened?” I ask, getting to the bottom of this shit fest.

“I told her,” he says, shaking his head. I can see the regret pouring out, spilling from him onto the rug. He plops himself on the couch, running his hands through his hair. “I had to tell her. I wanted nothing more than for her to be okay with it. How can someone as perfect be okay with any of this?” Looking around the room and his hands waving, he leans back on the couch as if having to give up on his happily ever after.

“How do you think it will work out?” I ask, handing him the best worry-be-gone formula I have for nine in the morning.

“I’m not sure,” he huffs, taking his coffee. “I’ve never felt anything remotely close to what I feel for her.” He looks at his cup in deep thought.

“Yeah, this sucks.” Does he have the same feelings as Carlie?

“You know Carlie better than anyone. What do you think?”

That may be true, but I can’t imagine how people will react—anyone.

“How do you even tell someone, ‘I’m in love with you?’ Also, ‘I’m a mafia soldier, so I kill people and shit for a living.’ Yeah, I didn’t see that going well.”

My eyes go wide, holding the warm beverage to my mouth.
